What is Enhanced 911?

Enhanced System" means that the 911 operator has call display features which tells them your phone number and the location you are calling from. However, you will still need to verify those things for them.

Enhanced 911 is a computerized system, which displays the phone number and location of 9-1-1 callers. This system allows communications personnel to know where a call originates from, even if the caller cannot speak. Even if the number you are calling from is unlisted or unpublished, the information will still be displayed. Enhanced 9-1-1 for cellular telephone calls is not yet available so it is very important to make sure to state the location of the emergency, nature of the emergency, who is involved and your cellular telephone number. When calling from a cellular telephone be aware of your surroundings, look for landmarks and when driving stop at a safe place and then place your call to 9-1-1.

Your on campus e911 location information is based on your telephone caller display information. You can check your caller display information anytime by calling x5999, or any phone on campus that has a display. If your caller display extension and location matches your physical location, you are all set. If anything needs to be updated, please contact our IT Helpdesk at x6888.

Remember that safety and security is a shared responsibility by all. Thank you for your help and support to keep our e911 system e911 ready!

What is your phone number and name?

Your phone number and name is used to call you back if the call is dropped, or by emergency responders if they need to contact you.

What is your emergency?

You may be asked a series of questions, even after emergency responders have been dispatched. In some situations, the call receiver will stay on the phone with you until help arrives. Do not hang up until told to do so, unless your safety is threatened.

Know Your Location.

One of the first things you will be asked when calling 9-1-1 is “What’s your location?” So, it’s important to: Post your address and medical information in your house. You may know this information, but someone else who calls 9-1-1 for you may not. When you are not at home, be aware of your surroundings. Street names, landmarks or mileposts can all be helpful in locating you.
