Mission Statement

Dominican University is committed to promoting a value-centered educational environment, which includes the sense of safety and security that all community members must have if the environment is to be conducive to academic and personal development. With the effective combination of security policies, educational programs, timely reporting and communication of campus crime statistics, the university can approach this ideal. Members of the campus community must realize that safety and security is a shared responsibility by the students, faculty and staff of Dominican University.

Responsibilities and Authority

What Public Safety is

Dominican University is served by Dominican University Public Safety Department, which is responsible for the reporting of all campus crimes and our compliance with the Student Right-To-Know Act and the Campus Security Act. Public Safety, located in the north end of the first floor of the parking garage, is staffed by full-time professional security personnel and is augmented by student personnel. The officers patrol the campus 24 hours a day 365 days a year and have a central dispatch center that coordinates all emergency and non-emergency requests for service. Rights and privileges of security officers

Security officers are an unarmed informational force and have jurisdiction in all areas of campus. They are in direct communication with the police and fire departments of River Forest, IL and call upon their assistance when needed. Public Safety may enter all public buildings including the residence halls at any time while on duty and may call for the detainment of trespassers or persons involved in criminal activities.

How to Report a Crime or Emergency In an emergency

  • Stay calm
  • Act quickly
  • Call for help from a safe place

Be prepared to give the following information

  • Building name
  • Room or apartment number
  • Street address
  • Nearby landmarks, if outdoors
  • Type of emergency

Fire: Report the type and size of fire

Medical: Report the type of illness or injury and any specific cause

Police/Security: Identify the crime or danger and give descriptions of suspects and, if a vehicle is involved, its description and its direction of travel

Chemical: Identify the chemical involved, quantity, hazards, and injuries
